Energy Drinks Can Help Or Harm

Energy drinks are (most often) carbonated drinks, intended to improve focus and increase physical performance. A pair of clinical studies have reported significant improvements in mental and cognitive performance, as well as increased subjective alertness. During repeated tests involving young healthy adults, it was determined that energy drinks can significantly increased upper body muscle endurance.
Consumers need to be aware that, these supplements do not provide food energy. Instead, energy drinks are scientifically designed to increase mental alertness, and physical performance; by introducing caffeine, vitamins, and herbal supplements. In many cases, these ingredients interact to provide an enhanced stimulant effect; greater than that obtained from caffeine on it's own. Many supplement manufacturers offer a selection of products, that include extra strength, decaffeinated; and smaller, more convenient "shots".

The physiological and psychological side-effects attributed to energy drinks, weight loss pills, and their ingredients; have been heavily investigated. It has been determined that excess consumption of energy drinks may cause mild to moderate episodes of euphoria. Other adverse effects, which affected mood and performance; include: nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, increased urination, abnormal heart rhythms, and upset stomach. This unwanted result is attributed to the stimulant properties of the caffeine, and their enhancement; by the presence of ginseng. As well, the caffeine found in energy drinks can excrete water from the body; leading to dehydration. If the body is dehydrated by 1%, performance is said to decreased; by up to 10%.

It is not likely that consumption of a single energy beverage, will lead to excessive caffeine intake; however, ingesting two or more beverages in a single day might. For concerned energy-seekers, supplement providers like 5 Hour Energy, have developed an innovative Decaf product to combat the negative effects; associated with the intake of too much caffeine. Regardless, nutritionists and health experts recommend water, or a sport drink, as the best choice for fluid consumption; during most types of exercise or physical activity.

A Woman’s Multivitamin & Lignavites

By: Kevin Agrawal

A woman’s health needs are different from a man’s. All the stages of a woman’s life—adolescence, womanhood, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause present particularly challenging needs. It goes without saying, well-balanced nutrition is important. This is especially true for today’s woman, who is quite adept at juggling a number of responsibilities every day. Maintaining good health, therefore, becomes a vital concern.

Most women support their diet with a multivitamin supplement to compensate for nutrients that may be lacking in a daily diet. But is this enough? Why settle for a multivitamin formula that meets the general needs of both men and women, when you can choose one that is specially formulated for women? A woman’s multivitamin formula should have the whole gamut of vitamins and minerals along with distinctive nutrients and herbs that specifically target women’s health. Here are a few of them:

Most women may not have heard of lignans, though we may be eating foods that contain lignans every day. Lignans are found in soybeans, high fiber foods like flaxseeds and cereal bran. Flax, wheat, oats, barley, rye, pumpkin, sunflower and berries contain lignans. Foods that are rich in lignans also contain protein, antioxidants, dietary fiber and other nutrients.

Lignans are phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens can mimic the activities of the hormone estrogen and thus are of benefit to a woman’s health. Estrogen helps to sustain bone and heart heath in women and is necessary for childbearing.
Lignans are metabolized in the colon and by the action of microflora, are converted to nutrients which the body uses to sustain various functions specific to women. In societies that consume higher intake of lignans by women, it is often associated with breast health, reproductive health, lower BMI and greater ability to dispose insulin by the body. Norway spruce lignans have been particularly noted for their potential ability to support menopausal health. HMR lignans, derived from plants, are known to have the highest antioxidant potency.

Lutein is one of the caretenoids found in foods like egg yolks, green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and peas. In the body, lutein is concentrated in the central part of the retina, called the macula. Therefore, lutein is especially noted for its role in supporting eye health, particularly age-related degeneration. Foods rich in lutein have also been noted to have protective benefits for breast health. Lutein is fat-soluble and needs to be consumed with small amounts of fat for its proper absorption. Nutrition experts suggest including 6 to 10 mg. of lutein in the diet every day for it to impart beneficial effects on health. Lutein is often found with zeaxanthin, in the same foods. Zeaxanthin is also beneficial to eye health.

Lactobacillus acidophilus has been associated with maintaining a correct pH in the digestive system. There is good scientific support for the use of acidophilus for controlling the growth of yeast in the vaginal canal. It also supports digestive and colonic health. Lactospore acidophilus is a natural delivery system that carries lactobacillus to parts of the body where it is needed the most.

Cranberry extract
Regular consumption of cranberry juice has always been grandmother’s answer for urological health.. Cranberries contain proanthocyanidins (PAC). Proanthocyanidins may help to dislodge microorganisms such E. coli which sticks to the lining of the urinary tract.. Experts agree that you would need about 500 mg. of PACs in your daily diet to get the full benefits. A glass of cranberry juice contains about 55 mg. Cranberry extracts are the popular choice since the extract offers higher value of PACs without the high sugar and calorie content of cranberry juice.

Decaffeinated Green Tea
The high antioxidant content of Green Tea has already made tea drinking a growing trend. Green tea supports heart health, can soothe the mind and has anti-aging properties which help to keep you looking younger, for longer! Green tea also helps to support your body when you’re on a weight loss program, along with a number of other health benefits.

All of these ingredients are combined in LignaVites, the number one women’s multivitamin supplement. The combination of vitamins, minerals, nutrients and herbs supports breast health, the reproductive system, urological health and the immune system. Lutein helps to nourish eye health, anti-aging and boosts your metabolism to support weight loss! A woman’s multivitamin supplements offer you so much more nutritional support for maintaining the specific health needs of a woman.

How Can A Daily Lutein Dosage Ensure Healthy Vision?

By: Peter Foremski

If a daily lutein dosage was shown to be of benefit to keeping your eyes in good health, would you take it? That's what many who now know about this antioxidant are thinking of doing, including myself.

Considering what I've recently learned about it, I really think there's something tangible to be gained.

Like many antioxidants it occurs naturally in such foods as egg yolks, certain fruits and in spinach. You may like leafy spinach but the experts reckon that to really reap the full benefits you would have to consume two big bowls every day to get the recommended daily lutein dosage.

One or two of those benefits include its ability to protect the central areas of your eyes, namely the retina and the macula, which deteriorates with ageing and may lead to an eye condition known as macular degeneration.

As we age we worry about avoiding other more spoken about illnesses like heart disease and cancers, and often forget about looking after such senses as our sight. That's a shame as getting older is unavoidable, but to not see as well as before is doubly hard on the elderly who suffer from impaired vision.

I have discovered a much simpler, quicker and more convenient method of ensuring you don't miss your regular lutein dosage.

Look around the supplements marketplace and it's possible to find products that now include it in a daily, total nutritional pill which ensures your body also receives all the other essential vitamins and minerals.

Boots Your Health With Natural Bee Pollen

Even though bee pollen has received a good deal of attention over the last few decades, a lot of people still do not know exactly what it is. Pollen is technically the male seed of flowers and can be viewed as the male cells of a flowering plant. It is necessary for the plant to be fertilized. Every kind of flower on his plant produces pollen, which is created in the stamen of the blossom itself. Bee pollen is the pollen which is collected and stored by honey bees in their hives. While honey bees perform this activity, they actually pollinate more than 80 percent of green growing plants. Obviously, they are a vital component of plant propagation. Universally, bee pollen is praised for its notable nutrient content and extraordinary ability to provide energy.

Used for centuries, bee pollen has been considered a powerful healing agent, a source of regenerative power, and the secret to eternal youth for some ancients. As far back as 2735 B.C., the Chinese emperor compiled an impressive medical collection containing many beehive products. This compilation is still referred to today, with ongoing research continuing to support many of its claims. For millions of years, humans have made good use of beehive products. Before paper was even invented, ancient people commemorated their respect of the honeybee and beehive products. Honeybees were considered to be sacred at this time, with Egyptian papyri referring to bee pollen as life-giving dust and its use as a sacred offering to the gods. Roman legions use to carry bee pollen for sustenance, with ancient Romans even making Virgil the official poet laureate of the honeybee.
Even Hippocrates recommended bee pollen for several ailments, while the Hindus taught that eating honey and pollen could produce health, vigor, happiness, and wisdom. Honey and pollen were routinely used by orientals for medicinal purposes, while Ancient Greeks referred to honey and pollen as the food of kings, as they believed the food would give them youth and vitality. Bee pollen was also looked upon as a dietary staple by the Anglo-Saxons. People drank combinations of wine, honey, and pollen because they believed that it was a life-sustaining elixir.

In the following centuries, Charlemagne recorded that his subjects used pollen and honey on a daily basis. He even required that his people take an annual inventory of their honey and pollen supplies. Taxes were often paid in the form of honey and pollen and gifts of honey and pollen were looked upon with respect. Almost every recorded religious or historical record praises the honeybee and its products such as bee pollen. These books refer to the beneficial healing and nutritive properties that bee pollen possesses. Aztec and Mayans even worshiped the honeybee, which can be proved through numerous images of honeycombs and pollen. Early American settlers even became actively involved in honey production, so that it could be used at the table.

Because American scientists have shown little to no amounts of interest in European documentation that supports the therapeutic value of bee pollen, most modern day scientific investigation has taken place in Europe. Other researchers have already discovered that this wonderful food contains concentrations of just about every known nutrient, with reports from areas of Europe and Russia confirming the belief that this substance has infinite value for health maintenance and diseases treatment.

Bee pollen is available in capsule, tablet, and bulk powder forms at your local or internet health food store. Always purchase a name brand bee pollen product to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase.

Good Fish Oil And How To Find It

You've probably heard it a hundred times but taking a good fish oil supplement really can improve your health and safeguard against many of the deadly diseases later on. The task is to pick the best from the many poor quality ones.

Good fish oil will provide you with the many well-known benefits including improved brain and heart health and lower cholesterol and blood pressure to name but a few. Bad ones will rob you of these and even put your health at risk because of contamination.
To ensure purity a quality oil with have undergone a process called molecular distillation which removes all the impurities like mercury, lead and PCB's that the fish pick up. This is especially important for pregnant or breast feeding mums.

The end result is not only pure concentrated oil but one with up to three times more omega 3 fats.

On the subject of these essential omega3's, the two important ones are DHA and EPA. Recent research shows us that it is the DHA which is responsible for most of the amazing health benefits, so look for a good fish oil with high levels of this, at least 250mg per gel.

Currently the very best source is from the pristine oceans of New Zealand, said to be the cleanest left on earth, from the native Hoki fish. This has naturally high DHA levels and is low in contamination, making it the perfect choice.

Another factor to watch out for is price.

I have seen many of the bad ones with little DHA and that have not undergone the distillation process going for over $50 for a month's supply!

The one I personally take is the purest in the world guaranteed with high DHA levels and goes for less than $20 for a month's supply.

I hope this brief guide to finding a good fish oil will enable you to select with confidence and start enjoying the many benefits that this incredible oil has to offer.

Learning To Eat Healthy Monounsaturated Fats

What are Monounsaturated Fats ?

Monounsaturated fats are "good" fats, compared to other types of fats such as saturated fats and trans fats. You can easily pack on the pounds by eating fatty foods, regardless of whether they good or bad, as fats are dense in calories. Compared to protein or carbohydrate, which only have 4 calories per gram, fat has 9 calories! So, it is not surprising that just hearing the word "fat" makes you immediately recoil. However, there are fats that your body requires to function properly and there are fats that will clog your arteries and can lead to heart disease and heart attacks. Learning to understand the difference between these good and bad fats can have
a profound effect on your health.
The Good Fats

These are primarily unsaturated fats, including both monounsatured fats and polyunsaturated fats. These fats are better for you and are liquid at room temperature. The monounsaturated fats family helps to lower bad LDL cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart disease. Apart from nuts and
vegetables, olive oil and avocados are a good source of these types of fats. Among the polyunsaturated fats, the best option are Omega 3 fats. These fats have anti-inflammatory properties and are found in oily fish, nuts, seeds, canola oil, and dark green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. Fish oil supplements are also a good source of Omega 3s. These fatty acids work to lower triglyceride levels, and aid in the prevention of heart disease and heart attacks. Switching to these healthy forms of fats in your diet and when cooking will promote well being and good health.

Bad Fats Lead to High Triglycerides

Triglycerides are fat globules found in your body, and the level can be determined by a routine blood test by your doctor. Triglycerides are formed in the body from excess glucose. So when you over eat, or have a diet that is high in refined carbohydrates and sugary foods, you are more likely to have high levels of triglycerides. The consumption of saturated fats, such as animal fats, and those fats that are solid at room temperature (such as butter for example) also elevate triglyceride and cholesterol levels. The worst type of bad fats are trans-fats. These are artificially created during the manufacturing process of some types of foods, such as margarine, and can raise your risk of heart disease by lowering good HDL cholesterol, and increasing bad LDL cholesterol.

Choosing the Right Foods

Foods to avoid are those that are high in saturated fats are oils made from animal fat, as well as tropical vegetable oils, such as coconut products. So not all vegetable oils are good for you. Make sure to look at the nutrition facts label and see which types of fat the food contains, and at what levels, to assist you in choosing the right foods and oils to cook with to lead to a healthier life.

Alkalizing Food Will Bring Health To Your Life - 3 Simple Tips

I know that you want to be healthy. Alkalizing food can make you healthy. When you are 25 years old, you have to know that this is the age of decline. Some people still look good by age 50 plus, but some already look old by age 30. This is premature aging. Premature aging can be caused by acidity in the body. Acidity is caused by our food intake. If we watch our food intake, we can change our health for the better.

When I turned 33, I never thought that I will feel so old and weary. I felt aches and pains in my joints and muscles, I felt migraine headaches, I always felt sick and tired, and I was getting symptoms of some major illnesses that I never had before. Little did I know that I was already acidic. Because Western diet is already really acidic, I did not know that I was eating a lot of acidic foods. I only learned about acidity and alkalizing food, and it literally saved my life.
You too can turn your health around. Just follow the simple tips below.

1. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are great at getting natural vitamins and minerals. You will surely get energy and a stronger immune system if you regularly eat fruits and vegetables.

2. Exercise daily or at least regularly. If you have an exercise routine, you will make it into a habit that is not easy to break. Forming a habit takes weeks. So have a bit of discipline to exercise for 3 weeks straight.

3. Avoid drinking and smoking as much as you can. The benefit of getting rid of these unhealthy habits will be tremendous to your health. Remember that drinking is highly acidic and can cause liver cancer. Smoking can cause a lot of lung problems aside from lung cancer. So quit it if you can.

4. The biggest thing you can do to turn your health around is to eat alkalizing food. For example, you can put lemon or lime in your water to make it alkaline, This technique along can cure the feeling of sickness and fatigue in a few weeks. Imagine the things you can do if you have a strict alkaline diet going for you.

I tried all of these tips and I found myself healthy and energetic again. Alkalizing food is like a miracle cure to all my ailments. Today, I look great and I feel even better.

What Is The Healthy Amount Of Fat To Consume To Lose Fat

Too many people have the thinking that all fats are bad. And if you want to burn fat then you should avoid fats all together. There are some good fats and there are some bad fats. If you consume the wrong fats then you increase your blood cholesterol, clog your arteries, increase fat storage and wreak total havoc in your body. But if you consume good fats then you will increase your energy, increase fat burning, increase muscle-building hormones, increase your strength, improve insulin function, improve your skin texture and strengthen your joints. So how much good fats is necessary to consume?

Eating small quantities of good fats is essential for fat loss and if you avoid fats all together than losing fat will be less effective. There are 9 calories in a gram of fat. If your dietary fat is reduced to below 10% of your daily calories then this can trigger the starvation alarm. Fat slows down the the release of carbohydrates into the bloodstream. Which means that without good fats your blood sugar spikes rapidly. when your blood sugar spikes your body releases more insulin and too much insulin cause fat storage. Little to no fat diet should be avoided.

The weight loss and diet industry is very diverse and there are zero fat diets but also very high fat diets. They insist that a very high fat diet (40-70% of your calories) is the ultimate method of losing fat. There are a lot of people who are willing to try this kind of a method, just because it sounds so radically different.

Although you can stay healthy consuming about 60% of fat. Eskimos eat a lot of fat, but the fat they have is from from fish, whale blubber and other unprocessed fats. The foods we have in our modern culture is full of processed fatty meats, hydrogenated oils, baked goods, fried foods, supermarket oils and other highly processed fats. And as I said before 1 gram of fat is 9 calories. If you eat only 100 grams of fat, even if it is good fats, then that would be 900 calories. But to lose fat you need a calorie deficit. High fat diets not effective as well.

So the healthy amount of fat should be somewhere in the middle of very low fat and high fat. Many experts and bodybuilders agree that should limit your total daily fat intake to about 20% of your daily calories and not less than 15% of total daily calories. That is good fats not bad fats.

Ginkgo Biloba Extract: What Are The Health Benefits?

Before you buy a ginkgo biloba herbal remedy, why not take a moment to learn a little more about ginkgo biloba uses. You may be hoping for improved memory or a reduction of vertigo, but there are other ginkgo biloba uses, as well.

Ginkgo History-Briefly
The Ginkgo tree is considered a living fossil. While other plants have diverged and formed various species over time, this one has remained almost identical to its ancestors that were present during the Pliocene period of the planet, which occurred over a million years ago. There are some specimens, living today, that are believed to be over 1000 years old. They were the only plants to survive the bombing of Hiroshima in Japan. The trees were charred, but survived the bombing and soon returned to good health.

The ginkgo biloba herbal remedy is extracted from the leaves of the tree. It has been used for many years. The leaves have pharmaceutical activity and are generally taken in dosages ranging from 40-200mg per day.

Ginkgo Biloba Uses

Scientific studies have supported the ginkgo biloba uses for the health of the brain and other bodily organs, by showing that it increases the oxygen content of cells and tissues. It has been shown to increase mental clarity and concentration, as well as increasing alertness and short term memory retention. It is for this reason that it has been suggested for preventing Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases, although there are other plant extracts, such as curcumin, that are believed to have even more benefit in this area.

Other ginkgo biloba uses are to protect the health of the heart. It may, however, interact with certain heart medications. If you are currently taking a prescription medication, check with your doctor before you take this supplement.

Ears, Vertigo...

A ginkgo biloba herbal remedy may be beneficial for reducing vertigo, dizziness or tinnitus, which is ringing in the ears. Again, it will work best for these purposes, if it is combined with curcumin and ginger extracts. This combination is also known to reduce stress and anxiety. There are not really many “stand-alone” extracts. There are lots of beneficial ones and they work well together, as long as the supplement is well designed.

Hearing, Strokes...

One of the ginkgo biloba uses includes the prevention of hearing loss, as it supports blood flow to the ears. It may help prevent strokes and protect the arterial walls from cholesterol build up that can lead to blockages. It has antioxidant activity and boosts ATP levels (another important nutrient).

In traditional medicine, the ginkgo biloba herbal remedy was recognized as an aphrodisiac. It is now recommended for impotence and ED. By increasing blood flow, this is one of the ginkgo biloba uses that are very likely to be beneficial.

If you have any kind of health problem or just don’t have as much energy as you would like to, increasing your intake of trace nutrients and extracts that are commonly missing from the diet can help. A ginkgo biloba herbal remedy is one of the ingredients that your supplement should contain. Liquid Multivitamins And Their Benefits On Health

Vitamins are known to be really powerful organic compounds available in little concentrations in different food sources. Vitamins are supported to function in certain specific ways and their role is vital for the body chemistry.

Multivitamins can be referred to as a combination of several vitamins and minerals. These are also available in the form of liquids, capsules, tablets and injections. These multi-vitamins play an important role in treating mineral and vitamin deficiency in the body. The deficiency may occur due to pregnancy, poor nutrition, frequent illnesses and reduced absorption of food items via stomach and several other conditions.

Liquid multivitamins are considered to be one of the most vital single supplements that can be consumed by anybody. Human body can perform to its ultimate level only when it is provided with a full fledged and complex line of important nutrients such as vitamin B, vitamin A and Vitamin K in conjunction with other important vitamins.

It is very necessary to consume high power multivitamins on a daily basis as it ensures that the presence of important co-factors. These further fights out several metabolic reactions that can result in impairments to several enzymatic processes that take place in the human body.

Vitamins are naturally found in the normal diet of an individual. However, due to the kind of irregular diet that we take these days, such as junk food, we are unable to get proper nutrient value. In order to make up for essential vitamin and mineral deficiencies, multivitamin should be taken in good amounts. However, you should make sure that multivitamins should be taken only when prescribed by a health care practitioner.

Liquid vitamins do not produce any side effects to the body. In fact, it is safe to use these multivitamins during pregnancy and breast feeding. These days, special pre-natal vitamins are available for babies. These are necessary for the healthy development of babies. Remember that large doses of certain vitamins can be really hazardous to the body.

One should consume liquid multivitamins with a glass full of water. Never consume these multivitamins on an empty stomach.

There are several benefits one can enjoy while having liquid multivitamins. One of the main benefits of this multivitamin in liquid form that it can be taken with ease. You don’t have to worry about swallowing large tablets and vitamins. These issues are not to be forced when it comes to taking liquid multivitamins supplements. These are also available in a wide variety of different flavors and pleasant to take.

Liquid multivitamins supplements can be easily absorbed by the body. This is because these vitamins do not require to be broken down in order to be absorbed. These are easily absorbed via the digestive process.

The liquid vitamins are absorbed immediately after they are taken. The effects of these vitamins are almost immediate once they enter inside the blood stream. This is because they are entered inside the blood stream in large quantities. Liquid vitamins taste better than those available in capsule or chewable form.

These are easy on digestion and have no side effects on the body.

Self-assembling proteins offer golden food future

By Prof. Simon B Widjanarko.

There is a big future for exploiting protein’s natural tendency to self-assembly into micelles or nanotubes, says a leading researcher in the field.

“Self-assembling of proteins is common. In fact, it’s more of a rule than an exception. If we can manipulate this self-assembling of proteins at the nanoscale, I see a big future for it,” said Professor Kees de Kruif from NIZO Food Research.
The majority of research in this area to date has focussed on dairy proteins, with the potential of casein micelles and alpha-lactalbumin nanotubes being explored, Prof de Kruif told FoodNavigator following his presentation to attendees at the Nanoscience conference at IFT Annual Meeting and Food Expo in New Orleans.
The protein casein makes up about 80 per cent of the protein content of cow’s milk (30-35 about 2.5 gram per litre grams per litre) and is found naturally in the form of spherical micelles with diameters ranging from 50 to 300 nanometres. The stability of these micelles during processing also makes them a very attractive nano-encapsulator.
Indeed, according to Prof de Kruif, Mother Nature designed the casein micelles to concentrate, stabilise and deliver nutrients to the newborn.
In nature, calcium phosphate is bound inside the micelles, but food scientist can replace calcium with other minerals or vitamins, thereby providing a delivery system for certain bioactive molecules.
“Caseins are very beautiful proteins, with functionalities in food unsurpassed by other food proteins,” said Prof. de Kruif. Indeed, they are very stable to heat, and the stability can be increased by cross-linking with transglutanimase (TGase).

Another dairy protein receiving interest from researchers is bovine alpha-lactalbumin.
By adding an enzyme to the protein, Prof de Kruif and his team were able to produce food-grade nanotubes.
“This was the first time that anyone made man-made nanotubes from proteins,” he said.
In addition, for food scientists, the tubular structures are more interesting than the spherical ones, he said.
Moreover, by taking the science further, and manipulating this self-assembly process, new proteins with new functionalities can be produced, said Prof de Kruif. “They could replace the use of gelatine.”
These nanotubes could also be used for encapsulation of ingredients, he said. Moreover, the nanotubes would not need to sealed and could be left open-ended. And how far away are we from using such nanotubes in food?
“This is still a bit far fetched in the sense that you can make the nanotubes and you can stabilise them, but they are too expensive for the food business at present,” he said.
“We need investment to scale this up.”

Beyond dairy

Since the self-assembling of proteins into intriguing structures is common to all proteins, Prof de Kruif says that, in principle, non-dairy proteins could be used.
“In theory, you need a long stiff molecule, like gelatine,” he said. “We should look at elongated structures because they’re the interesting ones, not the globular proteins.”
Study with plant proteins is still in its infancy, but the study performed with milk proteins should be translated to other proteins.
Prof de Kruif looks at the issue from a material science rather than food science point of view and focuses on understanding what properties the protein should have. “It’s the same as a chemical engineer asking what properties a plastic should have before they start developing it.”

The application of nanotechnology and nanoparticles in food are emerging rapidly, and some analysts predict that nanotechnology will be incorporated into 16.4bn worth of food products by 2010.
However, enthusiasm over the rate of progress and the possibilities is being tempered by concerns over possible downsides of the science.

A Healthy Breakfast Is Key

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We’ve all heard it before, but so few of us actually act on it. What you feed your body in the morning can be the difference between staying alert and energized throughout the day, or feeling tired and lazy. It can be the difference between staying focused at work, or finding yourself mentally drifting off not able to concentrate on the job at hand. It could be the difference between staying full until lunch, or constantly snacking throughout the day. Studies show that those who eat a healthy breakfast not only snack less, are more focused, and have more energy throughout the day, but also tend to be thinner than those eat an unhealthy breakfast (or skip it all together). It can literally be the difference between good health and poor health, and should definitely be taken seriously.

Never skip breakfast; in fact you should eat within an hour of getting up, that’s when your body needs refueling. When you wake up your body will have gone 8 to 10 hours without food (give or take depending on how long you slept), and it's running on reserves. The body uses stored fat as energy when it’s not getting this energy source from outside sources, and if the body knows it will be a long time before it gets refueled, then it will store extra fat as reserves for a later time.

So what’s secret to a healthy breakfast? There are three main ingredients to this recipe; a desire to be healthy, healthy food on hand (whole grains, organic fruit, nuts…), and an appetite. It’s that simple!

The first thing to remember is forget everything you thought you knew, or shall I say everything you’ve been made to believe. The typical American breakfast consists of foods loaded with fat, refined sugars and flowers, and artificial preservatives (chemicals); processed cereals, breakfast treats, bagels, toast, pastries, donuts, just to name a few. Although some of these products are marketed as healthy they are quite the opposite, and one of the leading causes of obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease in this country. The truth is these processed foods have become nothing more than science experiments by food manufacturers to see how cheaply they can produce and sell a product with a long shelf life, using the most readily available resources as possible. With the help of clever marketing such as “fat free” (which really means high in calories and sugar), “sugar free” (which really means high in fat, and calories), or “low in calories” (which means high in everything else), these highly processed nutrient deficient fake foods are loaded with artificial dyes and flavors and fortified with vitamins and minerals (all of which are lost during processing) and advertised as “part of a healthy breakfast”; all at our expense.

Instead, give your body what it really wants. The key here is eating a healthy breakfast, in order to give your body the nutrients it needs to function properly. Try fresh organic fruit, and some mixed nuts. The fruits will give your body the vitamins and minerals it needs, not to mention a healthy serving of flavonoids (which have been shown to have antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antioxidant qualities), while the nuts provide a good source of protein, omega-3, and healthy fat (all crucial elements to a healthy diet). Another great breakfast choice is whole grains. Stick with the organic minimally processed grains; these tiny seeds have everything necessary for creating life and are just what your body needs for maintaining yours. Try organic oat groats or hulless barley for a healthy and tasty breakfast.

Last but not least enjoy. Not only will you be laying the foundation for a healthy day by eating a healthy breakfast, you may actually just start looking forward it.

Human Health And Vitamins

The importance of eat certain food to obtain the enough nutrients, was recognized long before vitamins were identified. Supplements and compounds are good, but the first step for a healthy life is a correct nutrition.

Vitamins are essential nutrients for the proper functioning of the human body, and also a subject in which they are around all sorts of myths about its features, benefits and potential harms to health, caused by the lack or excess of a given vitamin type.

It is not necessary to have a complete understanding about the different vitamins, because a balanced diet is more than enough to meet the needs of a person with a normal activity. Yes, there may be problems with those folks that for several reasons are unable to eat properly, and also with those persons with a distorted conception of the human body and the nutritional needs. Persons in this last group are often taking vitamin supplements that they do not need, induced by the false belief that in this form they may have a more shaped body, muscle strength and a better health. The internet is full of these offers, so be careful before you buy, and avoid products that you do not need.

In fact, only a physician can determine whether a condition should be treated with vitamins or not, but as we said you do not need to spend time on a close reading about the vitamins and their properties, because if you are lucky enough to feed well, you should not suffer from any lack of vitamins. The main source of vitamins are the raw fruits and vegetables, so these group of nutrient must be always present in a balanced diet.

The lack of vitamins called hypovitaminosis, has specific symptoms according to type of vitamins that are lacking in the body, but there are some general such as loss of appetite, sleeplessness, irritability, depression, anxiety, fatigue and poor concentration. As we said earlier is very unlikely to present this lack if your diet is balanced, but if you have some of the symptoms described above, be sure to consult the doctor.

The excess vitamins in the body called hypervitaminosis, can be toxic, and the consequences depend on which vitamin is consumed in excess. It is quite unlikely to have hypervitaminosis due food consumption, but it is very common when a person is taking supplements and compounds in an irresponsible way, that do not add benefits to the health and may cause serious troubles. The symptoms are varied and depend about which vitamin has been consumed in excess, but include neurological problems, bone disorders, sexual troubles, visual ailments, gastric illnesses and many others.

You should never consume vitamin supplements without first consulting a doctor, and by all means you must avoid amateur advices in gyms and sport fields. Some times we think that we may have a lack of vitamins, but the symptoms could be linked with other health problems.

The Importance Of Supplements For Improved Health

There are many reasons to take supplements. Various health problems can be improved simply by getting proper nutrition. Many people have problems with their digestive systems that make it hard to absorb nutrients and break down the food they eat. This is a common problem. Problems with the digestive tract can be improved significantly by increasing your intake of nutrients. The best thing about supplements is the fact that you don’t need a prescription. You can select which ones you want on your own, and purchase them at your local nutrition store or online.

Most experts recommend that you take your supplements with food, because this allows your body to observe nutrients more efficiently. Time released supplements use better with food as well, since the digestion process helps move them through the body and helps to ensure that you get the vitamins and nutrients that you need at the right time. Vitamins that are water soluble are the most convenient, but if you are taking supplements that are fat soluble, make sure that you take them with food that contain the right amount of fat.

Healthy Low Fat Snacks

Everybody who's ever dieted before has broken the routine by snacking. Truly, this in an inevitable outcome and will happen to everyone (myself included).

But if you're going to snack, why not eat a healthy low fat snack? It's a good idea that many people should take into consideration. After all, half a cheesecake doesn't count as a snack anyway.

The first and most prominent, also the most important snack that comes to mind is fruit. Fruit, for the most part, is a naturally sweet substance that tastes pretty good.

Munching on an apple as opposed to ice cream is an incredibly smart alternative. Not only that but other fruits include grapes, oranges, bananas, watermelon, and the list goes on.

A lot of people, when they know something is good for them, are immediately deterred. They feel if it's healthy it's probably not tasty. But when it comes to fruit, that's certainly not the case. Plus, they're low in fat, which is the point of a health low fat snack!

Another fantastic healthy low fat snack to munch on is a rice cake. The reason their fantastic is that they are low in calories and come in a variety of flavors.

Personally, I was skeptical to the rice cake at first, but after having several of them as snack now and again, I've grown accustomed. A typical race cake is about fifty to seventy calories and flavors include apple, cheese, cinnamon bun, ranch, and even caramel.

The caloric total changes per cake, with highs around 70s and lows around 50s, making the average cake about sixty calories. The fat content also changes, but remains low through every cake.

Another great healthy low fat snack to munch on is nuts. Grabbing a handful of almonds or peanuts will run you about 100 calories, but you'll enjoy the handful in full. Peanuts also come in a variety of flavors, from salty to spicy; this might change the caloric content slightly, but not enough to stop snacking on them!

If you can't get your hands on regular fruit, then a fruit snack is a great alternative, and honestly a personal favorite. I would eat fruit snacks all day if I could (although this would defeat the healthy snack purpose). One bag of fruit snack is less than 100 calories, is enjoyable, and is a much better alternative than say a bag of cookies that's 300+ calories.

In the end, healthy low fat snacks, although stereotyped as not tasty and unappealing, are just the opposite!

Eating Foods Low In Cholesterol To Reduce Heart Disease Risk

If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from high cholesterol you are at an increased risk for a number of life threatening conditions such as heart disease. The first thing your doctor or any other health care professional will recommend is a lifestyle change based around a diet of foods low in cholesterol. This change in diet will require a certain mindset in that you will have to make a dedicated effort to make the changes necessary to restore yourself to a more healthy state.

Finding low cholesterol foods at the local market is not difficult once you get the hang of it, but to do this you will have to make a concerted effort to learn about the cholesterol and fat content of foods. It is also important to remember that how you prepare your food can also have an impact on blood cholesterol levels.

What possible way can food preparation have on the amount of cholesterol in that food, you ask? There have been numerous studies done on how different nutrients in food affect cholesterol levels in the body. What medical science has found is that foods that are high in cholesterol do not necessarily mean that blood cholesterol levels will rise if you eat them. The nutrient that has the biggest affect on blood cholesterol is fat, and more specifically saturated fat and trans fat. In fact these two forms of fat are considered a higher risk for cholesterol in the body then foods that actually contain high amounts of cholesterol. This does not mean you can eat these types of food with abandon, as with most things moderation is the key.

One example of this phenomenon is the egg. Egg yolks are notoriously high in cholesterol, so much so that many people separate the egg whites from the yolk before using them to cook with. But eating a whole egg by itself does lead to any noticeable rise in blood cholesterol levels. Add in some bacon or sausage and cook those eggs up in grease or oil of some kind and blood cholesterol levels shoot up.

The same thing applies to fried foods. Chicken or fish are good sources of lean protein with minimal amounts of fat. The moment they are battered and fried though their ability to raise cholesterol levels is greatly increased. This is why the way you prepare your food is half the battle.

When grocery shopping it pays to read the labels and see how much cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fat is in the foods you buy. By doing this you can get a good feel for what you should and shouldn't buy in your fight to lower your cholesterol. There are also a myriad of books and internet sources that have lists of foods low in cholesterol and the recipes to prepare them in a healthy fashion.

Healthy Soy Free Food Shopping Tips

For many people shopping is not fun, especially food shopping, and more specifically shopping for “healthy foods” instead of the “quick and easy, ready to eat pre-packaged foods” that have become staples in so many of our diets. That alone is enough to make most food shoppers run for the hills, so when a food restriction such as a soy allergy is added to the list full blown panic is sure to follow…quickly! You can’t put all the blame on the shopper though; our busy life styles are partly to blame. When you’re working 10+ hours a day, not counting the 2 hours a day of commuting time, plus driving the kids all over town, and trying to get at least 6 of the 8 recommended hours of sleep, it doesn’t leave much time for cooking let alone shopping for food, and food manufacturers use that to their advantage. Food advertisement after food advertisement is using our busy “on-the-go” lifestyles as the main pitch for their product, but can you blame them? They’re in this for one reason, to make money. It’s our job to decide what’s best for us, not the food manufactures, and it all starts at the grocery store. So let’s take a peek, shall we?

For starters stay away from the food aisles you usually spend the majority of your time in since most of what you’ll find there is not very healthy for you, and is sure to have soy in it. Most grocery stores have the entrance right next to the produce section, but most shoppers spend the least amount of time here. When people see the produce section they tend to see a lot of meal preparation time, and can easily be overwhelmed by the amount of different foods they know very little about. The truth is what’s quicker and easier than putting a salad together, or steaming some vegetables for a healthy side dish, and don’t worry about only being able to identify 1/3 of what you see. There is usually at least one employee working the produce section who would be happy to tell you what that fruit or vegetable is you have in your hand, and the knowledgeable ones may even be able to tell you how to prepare it; and let’s not forget the internet. With a few taps on the keyboard and clicks of the mouse you’ll be able to find dozens of recipes for whatever you find at the store, regardless of how exotic it may be. The truth is I do about 85 percent of my shopping in the produce aisles and you should try to do the same. You would be amazed at the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and with most grocery stores stocking organic produce these days you’re bound to find plenty of good tasting healthy “Soy-Free” foods.

Next, for all those prepackaged foods that are still on your list, always look into the organic brands first. They’re usually a little more expensive, but with organic foods becoming more and more popular more stores are carrying their own brands of organic foods. When you buy organic you can be sure you’re buying all natural foods with no artificial preservatives, no food colorings, and no dyes. It is still very important to read the labels though, because signs of the “soy conspiracy” can still be found in the “all natural” foods, but it’s not as prevalent as in the heavily processed non-organic foods so you're bound to find what your need. In the case where an organic brand is not available then look for the brand with the least amount of ingredients on the package; stick with all natural ingredients and no artificial additives. If you’re buying ketchup for instance, why is there anything in the bottle except for tomato related products and maybe some sea salt?

At this point in your food store venture, there shouldn’t be anything else on your list except for the non-edibles; that wasn't so bad, was it? So let’s recap your food shopping experience; stock up heavily on fresh produce, go organic when possible, choose products with the least amount of ingredients listed, and always scrutinize food labels for soy related ingredients. Using this method of shopping you might just find yourself eager to go to the food store and buy what you need; your next healthy meal is only a produce aisle away.

Health, Supplements, And Vitamins

With the right vitamins and supplements, your health will skyrocket, no doubt. If you're eating like most of our society, you're in desperate need of proper nourishment. While your belly may be full, your cells are starving. Perhaps your mind isn't functioning the way you know it should. Or maybe you're all "out of whack" emotionally, experiencing bouts of anxiety, depression, irritability, or overall emotional fatigue.

With the right vitamins and supplements, these ailments can vanish, just like that.

Even if you're "eating well," including lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and the like, the quality of our soil has been so depleted by overproduction, herbacides, pesticides, and a number of other factors that even those good-for-you foods you know you should eat, though better than burgers and fries by a mile, could still very easily lack the nourishment your body is begging you for.

Over time this cellular starvation can lead to cancer. And what we DO ingest - foods of a salty, sugary, fatty, high-cholesterol, and/or chemically derived nature - will lead to our horrible demise via diabetes, heart disease, or stroke, among a host of other monsters.

Again, with the right vitamins and supplements, you'll be giving yourself a much, much stronger chance of avoiding these terrors.

There are three things we can focus on, and put into practice on a daily basis, that can dramatically change our fate for the better:

Ample Hydration. 4 to 6 liters of purified water will keep your cells plump & healthy, your blood (and therefore your entire body, including your brain) oxygenated & functioning optimally, and your entire system flushed, clean, renewed, and alive!
Responsible Diet. Just make a few small changes. No fast food or soda. Substitute fresh fruit, raw almonds, and/or yogurt for sugary desserts. If you have a vegetable juicer, use it. If not, consider investing in one.
Supplement. As mentioned above, we need the right kinds of vitamins and supplements. What is meant by that is all-natural, whole-food options. Synthetic, drugstore vitamins SUCK! Avoid them. Go to your local health food store and ask for a whole-food multi with chelated minerals, probiotics, and natural enzymes. In addition, I recommend a green tea and/or acai berry supplement for amazing antioxidant benefits (as well as weight loss, if needed).

Vitamins and health supplements will take you to a level that perhaps you've never been, in your energy, radiance, emotions, mental clarity, and overall health. This will only occur, however, if your vitamins are of a whole-food variety. Synthetic vitamins just end up as expensive fluorescent green urine!

Thank you for reading.

Foods High In Antioxidants, Importance Of Antioxidants Foods

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and stop them from impairing our cells. Free radicals are highly reactive chemical substances that can cause cellular damage if left unchecked, leading to premature aging and disease.

Are you looking for best sources of natural antioxidants and how to work them best into your diet? With so many dietary supplements around it seems that all you need to do to stay healthy is to take several of these pills a day. Don't let the advertisement mislead you. Antioxidants are extremely important to our health, but no supplement can beat antioxidants we get naturally from food.

Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals come from a variety of sources such as air pollutants and cigarette smoke. Examples of antioxidants include Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, beta carotene, selenium and lycopene.

Even though a lot of people don't actually realize it, a lot of antioxidant foods that we consume are from vegetables. Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peppers are all excellent choices with some great benefits for your body. When consuming vegetables, you should always go for those that are rich in color, as they are high in what is known as phytonutrients.

Antioxidants can be found in a number of different foods or can likewise be taken in supplements and it can be found in tea. Both black tea and green tea has antioxidants that can be beneficial to the body by drinking a cup of tea at anytime of the day.

Foods high in antioxidants include specific fruits and vegetables - green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale delivering significant amounts of the antioxidant lutein; tomatoes and tomato products carrying the antioxidant lycopene; fruits such as blueberries and other berries, kiwi, prunes, and pink grapefruit; vegetables rich in the antioxidant beta-carotene including carrots and sweet potatoes; and foods high in antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C, and E.

Other delicious tasting and helpful antioxidant foods would include foods such as watermelon, spinach, apricots, pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes and nuts. One major benefit in taking supplements is that you do not have to worry about consuming many of the added chemicals that can be found in a variety of foods. You also will not have to worry about a high calorie intake or a high consumption of sugars.

Antioxidant rich foods are nature's way of guiding us to a healthy life. Fresh fruits and vegetables should form an important part of our lives. It is not a question of whether we like them or not, it is a question of how we have evolved over thousands of years. It has only been in the last hundred years or so that we have changed our diets drastically; prior to that we had no option but to feed ourselves with natural foods
